Waynesboro, PA Real Estate and Community Information

History

For hundreds of years before John Wallace settled the land in 1751, Native Americans occupied the area around Antietam Creek. A descendent of the original settler began plotting the town of Waynesburg. The borough was assigned the name of Waynesboro in 1831. The American Civil War brought plenty of action to the area when confederate troops passed through the area in the summer of 1863 on the way to the Battle of Gettysburg. Waynesboro was ruled by Confederate soldiers for 15 days during the Civil War. George Frick has a huge impact in the area following the foundation of the Frick Company in 1873. He gained famed for inventing a steam engine small enough for farm use. Later the company manufactured refrigeration and air conditioning equipment, and still currently operates as part of York International. http://www.waynesboropa.org/history/ Starting in the 1900s, the area was a center of industry and remained so.
