Within driving distance of Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia is one of Pennsylvania's most historic and picturesque communities, the Borough of Greencastle is located in the south-central portion of the sate. With a population of just under 4,000 people, the Borough is a wonderful and warm community with an abundance of enriching activities and home to a small but vibrant population.

History

In the early colonial period a group of hopeful settlers homesteaded the area of present day Franklin County, attracted to the fertile soil found within the region. The first families to settle the area were mainly of Scot-Irish origin with some German and Swiss settlers as well. Shortly after the end of the Revolutionary War, a former colonel of the Cumberland County militia, John Allison, made his way to the area which is present day Franklin County and founded the area of Greencastle in 1782. The Borough grew quickly after its initial settlement and was officially incorporated March 25, 1805.

Parks and Recreation

There are no words for the natural beauty present in this small but picturesque Borough. The Borough provides several parks for residents to further enjoy the area's natural and exquisite beauty. The Boroughs lovely parks include the Antrim Township Community Park, the Martin Mill Bridge Park, and the Enoch Brown Park.

In an area that is known for its long history it is no surprise that there are several notable historical attractions. The community is very proud of such sites as the Martins Mill Bridge, the Browns Mill School and the Allison-Antrim Museum. In this beautiful Borough, you will find, that history is very much alive.

Events

The Borough is very proud of its community and its many longstanding traditions. Borough residents look forward to traditional community events, such as the summer's Sidewalk Sale Days, the autumnal First Fridays, the Borough's Heritage Christmas, and the longest running reunion in the United States, Old Home Week.
Old Home Week is one of the many wonderful community traditions, which make this Borough such a wonderful place to call home. It dates back to 1901 when a man named Philip Baer wrote a letter to the town's press asking for their assistance in organizing an Old Boys’ Reunion in the summer of 1902. The tradition, which is nearly a century long, is still ongoing. This year marked the 39th triennial celebration of Old Home Week.
