History

The county seat of Pennsylvania's Franklin county, Chambersburg, which traces its history back to 1730, played an important role in the U.S. Civil War. Chambersburg was settled by Colonel Benjamin Chambers in 1764. People traveling to the western part of the United States frequently passed through the borough. It was occupied by Confederate forces several times during the Civil War. Part of the town was burned during the war.In fact,"Remember Chambersburg!" became a battle cry for Union forces after this burning took place. It was rebuilt, and it has grown since then.
