Brief History
Chambersburg was founded in 1730 and is a vibrant and historic community. The Borough was originally founded by Benjamen Chambers who settled in the beautiful area west of the Susquehanna River. Chambers, accompanied by his brother choose to settle in the area of the Conococheaque Creek and the Falling Spring for its ample water supply. The location of their settlement provided the brothers with the perfect location for the opening of the gristmill and a sawmill they were to operate for many years.
By 1764 the community was formally laid out extending outward from the fort that had been built for the community's protection. Over the next fifty years the settlement grew and in 1803 the borough was officially chartered. Today the community is the thriving heart of cultural and governmental activities in Franklin County.
